In Boston, Tower Trim Means Curtains for Dainty Dot

Officials at Boston's City Hall have reached a compromise with developers of a 299-foot-tall residential tower in the city's Chinatown district: They'll lop 34 feet off the height, but that means eliminating the renowned Dainty Dot hosiery building that exists on the site.

Many preservationist neighbors had lobbied to at least preserve a part of the 119-year-old structure near Essex Street and Surface Artery. The developer had originally planned to save all or part of the building.
