Harvard Art Museum leaders have learned the value of caution when it comes to announcing proposed galleries. In 1999, neighbors raised a ruckus when the university proposed building a pair of museums on the Charles River. Then in 2006, neighbors successfully rejected a proposed museum in Allston.

Today, museum leaders are quietly ensuring that Cambridge residents are on board with their latest plan: a renovation of the Quincy Street space that currently home to the Fogg Art Museum and Busch-Reisinger Museum.
