The Motown Technology & Sports Facility, a 1.6 million-square-foot sports and entertainment project, is coming to Metropolitan Detroit. Metro Sports Center L.L.C. has revealed plans for the cutting-edge mixed-use development, which will cost an estimated $200 million to complete.
In addition to a 12,000-seat arena, the Motown Technology & Sports Facility--the working name of the project--will feature an education and technology center, and athletic facilities to include basketball courts, hockey rinks, a running track, indoor lacrosse area, swimming pools, a fitness center and a rehabilitation center. Among the entertainment options will be two IMAX movie theaters, an arcade and a bowling alley. The project will also offer a child care center and banquet hall. And a hotel will round out the development. "There's nothing of this magnitude in the State of Michigan," a Metro Sports spokesperson told CPN. "We have individual sports facilities but nothing that has all of these features; nothing."
Metro Sports is working on gaining approval to build in Romulus, a city about 20 miles outside of Detroit. "We have not gotten an answer back from the city yet, so we're beginning to look around; we have a team of people working on it," the spokesperson said. "But for certain, it will be in Southeast Michigan." Walsh Construction and JL Dumas Construction have been tapped to build the development, while Prime Design Systems Inc. is on board as the project architect. If all pieces fall into place as planned, ground could break on the project this fall.
